The 8th World Congress on Oral Implantology & American Academy of Implant Dentistry Global Conference was held at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi, India from the 20-22nd November'2010. The Congress was attended by 800 delegates that included 650 national, 150 international and 39 internationally acclaimed Keynote Speakers.
THE PRE CONFERENCE COURSES were held on the 18th and 19th of November at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences witnessed an impressive turnout. Lectures and hands on courses were conducted by renowned clinicians including Dr Stuart Orton Jones (United Kingdom), Dr Andre Saadoun (France), Dr Shankar Iyer (USA), & Dr Shlomi Birshan (Israel) on varied topics ranging from occlusion to sinus lifts. They were designed to help participants identify and solve day to day problems in everyday clinical practice. The details of the pre conference courses held are as under:
1.    The Ultimate in Impressioning and Physiologic Jaw recordings for all Removable Prosthetic Procedures- Dr Shankar Iyer & Dr Asha Samant

The scientific program of the conference started on  at 9:15 A.M. on 20th November with the opening lecture of Dr Mark Lin (Canada) and was chaired by eminent personalities like Dr Shigeo Osato (Japan) and Dr Mukesh Dhanda. Day 1 witnessed lectures by Dr Len Tolstunov (USA), Dr Andre Saadoun (France), Dr Frank La Mar (USA), Dr Rod Stewart (USA), Dr Marius Steigmann (Germany), & Dr Jun Shimada (Japan). Limited Attendance Clinics by Dr Frank La Mar (USA), Dr Mohommed Moini (USA), & Dr Len Tolstunov (USA) were held concomitantly.
Day 1 also included a visit to the Trade Fair 'Dentechnika' where 45 leading companies including Dentsply India, Novaxa Enterprises, Colgate, Oral B, Adin Implant Systems, Katara Dental, Biohorizons,  Alpha Biotech, Nobel Biocare, Lifecare, Rocky Mountain Tissue Bank/Tatum Surgicals, Septodont, Ivoclar Vivadent, 3M Espe, & Coltene Whaledent, to name a few, exhibited the latest in materials and technology.

THE INAUGURAL CEREMONY for the 8th WCOI & AAID Global Conference was held at the Sovereign Hall in Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi on the 20th of November'2010 at 5:45 P.M. The inaugural ceremony was formally opened/inaugurated by  Shri Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communication & IT, & His Excellency Mr Hideaki Domichi, Ambassador of Japan, Dr Shigeo Osato, Dr Hajime Miyashita, Dr Rod Stewart, and members of the Organizing Committee, Prof (Dr.) Mahesh Verma (President 8th WCOI), Dr Shankar Iyer (Chairman, WCOI) & Dr Brij Sabharwal (Organizing Secretary) all of whom recognised India's elevated status in the field of Implantology and appreciated the initiative to organise such an event. To mark this momentous occasion, a Special Day Cover was released on behalf of Department of Posts, Govt. of India by Shri Sachin Pilot.

The ceremony also witnessed the release of the Delegate Book by the Ambassador of Japan, Mr Hideaki Domichi and Prof (Dr.) Mahesh Verma (President 8th WCOI).

The inaugural function was followed by a Gala evening; 'Colors of India' which showcased the rich cultural heritage and ethnicities, and culinary diversities of our great nation. The energetic performances by the Folk Dancers representing diverse states of our country like Rajasthan, Manipur, and Punjab left the crowd spellbound.  The evening ended with  a regal dinner comprising of traditional dishes from various parts of our country.

During the Congress, Scientific Sessions were held on the 20th, 21st, & the 22nd of November at Hotel LeMeridien. Twenty five international & 14 National keynote speakers shared their knowledge, views and clinical experience with close to 800 delegates. Leading Implantologists such as Dr Jun Shimada (Japan), Dr Tetsu Takahashi (Japan), Dr Sadami Tsutsumi (Japan), Dr Yoshinoi Arai (Japan), Dr George Sekine (Japan), Dr Yasunori Hotta (Japan), Dr Hilt Tatum (France), Dr Wilfried G Schilli (Germany), Dr Rod Stewart (USA), Dr Natalie Wong (Canada), Dr Andre Saadoun (France), Dr Mohammed Moini (USA),  Dr Sharon Azavedo (Canada), Dr William Nordquist (USA), Dr Kulminder Bahi (Canada), Dr Ming Yi Chou (Canada), Dr Raghu Puttiah (USA), Dr Reena Talwar (Canada), Dr Shlomi Birshan (Israel), Dr Len Tolstunov (USA), and Dr Kim Hong Ki (Korea) among others enthralled the audience with their captivating lectures.

A symposium on 'Implant Dental Education-Where do we go from here?' was held on 21st November. It was chaired by prominent academicians such as Prof (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, Director-Principal, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Dr Asha Samant (USA), Dr Robert Flinton (USA), Dr Shanker Iyer (USA), Dr Sabita Ram (India), & Dr Suhasini Nagda (India) who analyzed and compared the current states of implant education programs in different parts of the world and deliberated upon the best course of action for the advancement of Implant education.

Simultaneously, Limited Attendance Clinics were held from 9:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. and 2 P.M. -5 P.M. on all the three days. It provided the delegates to have an interactive, personalized session with leading Implantologists such as Dr. William Nordquist, Dr. Len Tolstunov, Dr. Frank LaMar, Dr Irfan Kachwala, Dr Mohammed Moini, Dr Asha Samant,   Dr. Stuart O Jones, Dr. Natalie Wong, Dr.  Rod Stewart, Dr. Mark Lin, & Dr. Gary Wadwha amongst others. Topics ranged from 'Managing Ailing and Failing Implants', 'Suturing Techniques', 'Bone manipulation & grafting technique', & 'Anterior Implant Aesthetics' to name a few.
The Congress also provided an opportunity and platform to 120 national and international delegates to display their research and clinical cases through papers and e-poster presentations.

The Presidential Banquet was held at the Presidential Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi on the eve of 21st November 2010. The delegates were greeted by majestic elephants, horses, and camels symbolising the grandeur Indian hospitality is famous for. The entertainment for the evening was highlighted by a scintillating dance performance by "Tanushree Shankar and her troupe" from Kolkata which left everyone mesmerized. Street dancers from various parts of India intermingled with the crowds and enticed them to participate in their dances.

Followed by the Congress, a Post Conference Course on Advanced Bone Grafting techniques was held from the 23rd -25th November at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences. The course elaborated and provided hands on experience on patient for Sinus Augmentation (Direct and Indirect techniques), Block Grafting techniques (Autogenous and allogenic grafts), Ridge Expansion and tunnelling techniques using osteotomes, bone expansion screws, & piezosurgery. It provided an opportunity for the delegates to expand their clinical acumen by doing challenging clinical cases under the adroit guidance of an elite panel of experts namely Dr. Hilt Tatum, Dr Shanker Iyer, Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, Dr Rod Stewart, Dr Shane Samy, Dr Natalie Wong, Dr Stuart Orton Jones, Dr Brij Sabharwal, & Dr Gary Wadhwa.

The Congress was highly appreciated for its organization and substance by all attendees who left not only with their knowledge and clinical skills updated and improved, but also with several memorable moments to cherish.
