Principal's Message
Dear Friends,
Dr. Mahesh Verma
( Director & Principal)

I shall not try to hide the feeling of immense pride which overwhelms me as I present to the website of Maulana Azad institute of Dental Sciences, which highlights the accomplishments of the institute in the year gone by, and provides information with regard to day-to -day functioning of the institute.

As we move on, I cannot help but the reminded of the history of our dental institute. Post independence, the city of Delhi witnessed rapid growth in a short period of time. The fast expanding city was converted into a world class destination with the tireless efforts of millions of people who migrated to the city after independence, and it only seemed fitting, that the city took care of health need of its population. Considering the dental demands of the people of Delhi, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) began, as a small department of dentistry under Maulana Azad Medical College and associated Lok Nayak Hospital in the 1960s. At the time, this dental department was served by a group of senior dental surgeons who worked on honorary basis. Some of those great names include Dr. PP Sawhney and Dr. PL Khurana, both honorary dental surgeons during the third quarter of the last century. This formed the foundation of organized dental care ultimately leading to start of formal dental education in the city.

The next major milestone was in the year 1983, when Dr. PP Thukral was formally appointed as the first Associate Professor and Head of Dental Wing. In the same year, the first batch of BDS students was admitted to MAMC. The year 1984 saw Dr. AN Srivastava being appointed as the Head of Dental Wing, followed by Dr. NC Sangal in 1991. As the Dental Wing was gaining more and more popularity in and around Delhi, especially as the closest dental institutions were present at faraway places like Amritsar and Lucknow, the OPD attendance, especially speciality dental care, started increasing rapidly.

And thus to keep up with the requirements, the Dental wing also underwent rapid changes under its able leadership. In 1995, I took over the reins from Dr. NC Sangal, and was fortunate enough to oversee, along with my team, the transformation of the Dental wing into a full-fledged Dental College. Initially named Maulana Azad of Dental College and Hospital, it was soon converted to an autonomous institute under the Delhi Government, and was rechristened Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences in 2006. The number of BDS seats was increased from 20 to 40, and MDS courses were introduced in the year 2007. The institute was declared a “CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE” by the Delhi Government for its tremendous contribution in providing high quality dental care to the masses.

Thus within a short period of time MAIDS, with the aid of its hard working staff and dynamism of its leaders has become the top rated Dental institution in the whole India. Situated in the heart of the capital city, institution enjoys the best of the only recognized government dental college in the national capital region of Delhi.

The recent past witnessed Delhi hosting the Common Wealth Games and the CWG village was showcased at the best. MAIDS made its contribution by setting up a full-fledged dental clinic at the games village. Players and officials of more than 75 participating countries were provided world class dental treatment at the clinic. A large number of participants at the games went back with fond memories of the clinic and the institute. Our services were recognized and flashed in the press and electronic media.

Already declared the best Government Dental College in India by the Outlook Magazine for the third consecutive year, the institute, with its glorious past and a promising future, is working tirelessly to reach greater heights in the service of mankind.

In September 2011, competing against some big names in the health-care industry, MAIDS was awarded the prestigious ‘FICCI award for operational excellence’ in healthcare.

MAIDS has now become the first dental college in the country to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care Providers (NABH). This is recognition of the high standard of quality that is being followed in our institution.

Working with the philosophy that, the only way to reach your goals is to keep walking, I am pleased to inform you that the work of constructing Phase-II of MAIDS shall start shortly. The new building shall have 12 more floors dedicated to research and improvement in dental education. We also plan to implement by next year, our aim of taking dental care to the patient’s doorsteps, by opening satellite centers in remote parts of Delhi. Needless to say, we as a team at the institute are working against time to make that happen.

I share the pleasure of my colleagues at the institute in knowing that their clinical expertise, research, and education is contributing immensely to improvement in patient care and I’m certain that the rich legacy that we have inherited from the early pioneers shall be taken forward into the future capable hands at MAIDS.

Jai Hind
